A few months ago, I had the opportunity to photograph Madeline and Pedro's engagement session at Oak Alley Plantation, and from the moment we started shooting, it was clear just how much these two adore each other.
A Beautiful Louisiana Engagement Session
Madeline and Pedro chose Oak Alley Plantation because of its stunning scenery, and it did not disappoint. The grounds are meticulously maintained, with beautiful gardens, mature oak trees, charming fountains, and the famous tree-lined walkway leading to the plantation house.
One of the things I love most about photographing engagement sessions at Oak Alley is the variety. We can capture romantic portraits beneath the centuries-old oak trees, elegant images in front of the plantation house, and playful moments throughout the gardens—all without ever feeling like we're repeating the same backdrop.
The combination of natural light, lush landscaping, and classic Southern charm creates the perfect setting for timeless engagement photos.
Choosing Outfits That Feel Comfortable and Confident
One thing I always encourage my couples to do before their engagement session is choose outfits that make them feel comfortable and confident.
Madeline did exactly that.
Before the session, I helped her select outfits that complemented both her personal style and the atmosphere of Oak Alley Plantation. She chose several beautiful dresses that photographed wonderfully while still allowing her to feel completely comfortable throughout the session.
One of my favorite looks was a floral maxi dress that paired perfectly with the gardens and Southern scenery. Later, she changed into another floral dress that brought beautiful color and movement to the photos beneath the famous oak trees. She also wore a gorgeous blue dress that highlighted her figure and photographed beautifully against the natural backdrop.
The best part wasn't simply how the outfits looked, it was how they made her feel.
When you feel comfortable in what you're wearing, you're able to focus on enjoying the experience instead of worrying about your clothing, adjusting your outfit, or wondering how you look in every pose. That confidence always shines through in photos.
The Moment That Had Everyone Laughing
One of my favorite memories from this engagement session happened in the most famous spot on the property—the iconic Oak Alley itself.
I wanted to capture a few romantic images of Madeline and Pedro slow dancing beneath the canopy of oak trees. There was just one small problem:
Neither of them knew how to dance.
What started as a simple pose quickly turned into an impromptu dance lesson.
I spent time showing them how to position their hands, where to place their feet, and how to move together naturally. At one point, I was literally demonstrating the steps myself to help them understand what I was looking for. After about twenty minutes of laughing, practicing, and trying not to step on each other's toes, we finally got everything looking natural and comfortable.
That's when we looked up.
A crowd of visitors had gathered on the plantation balcony overlooking the alley, quietly watching the entire process. Apparently, they had been waiting for us to finish so they could take their own photos from the balcony. The three of us couldn't stop laughing.
What could have been an awkward moment turned into one of the most memorable parts of the session. Those are often the moments that make engagement sessions so special.
Engagement Sessions Should Feel Like a Date
One of the biggest concerns I hear from couples is that they're worried they'll feel awkward in front of the camera. The truth is that almost every couple tells me that before their session. My goal isn't to force you into stiff poses or make you perform for the camera. My job is to create an environment where you can relax, have fun, and enjoy spending time together. The best engagement photos happen when couples are laughing, talking, teasing each other, and simply enjoying the experience. That's exactly what Madeline and Pedro did throughout their session.
They spent the evening laughing together, sharing quiet moments, and enjoying each other's company—and those genuine interactions created some of my favorite images from the entire session.
